Dymatize Iso 100 Protein Powder Review: Tried & Tested

I’ve walked past Dymatize 100 times in my local grocery store and I figured that it wouldn’t be good because most protein powders that they carry in grocery stores have terrible ingredients and taste awful.

But after hearing some positive reviews from my clients about the product I decided to give it a go.

Now that I’ve tried it for a month, here’s my quick take:

Dymatize is ideal for those who like a fast-digesting protein powder after their workout but may not be the best option for those who want a protein powder to manage hunger (i.e. it’s not a good meal replacement on its own). Dymatize is easy to digest and mixes well in a variety of liquids. It has a sweeter taste than most protein powders I’ve tried without any poor aftertaste.

To put Dymatize’s Iso 100 Whey protein to the test I compared it across 8 different whey protein standards. I also read through numerous reviews from other customers so that you can see what others had to say as well.

Overall Rating: 4.4/5

Dymatize: The Company

Dymatize is a supplement company that specializes in nutritional and bodybuilding supplements like protein powder, mass gainers, and aminos.

Dymatize has fewer products than most other supplement companies but it appears that they’d rather create a couple of excellent products than spread themselves too thin and have many subpar products.

“We’re in pursuit of creating supplements that work as hard as you. By focusing on what we’re good at. And being the damn best at it. Because it’s not enough to taste the best. It needs to fuel your best.”

– Ted Casey, CEO Dymatize

Overview of Dymatize’s Iso 100 Whey Protein

Dymatize’s Iso 100 Whey Protein

Dymatize Iso 100 is a whey protein made with hydrolyzed whey and whey protein isolate (the two fastest absorbing types of whey). It also contains 5.5g of Branched-Chain Amino Acids and 2.6g of leucine per serving.

The protein is flavored with natural and artificial flavors and sweeteners (sucralose and stevia).

macronutrient breakdown per serving of Dymatize’s Whey Iso 100

Depending on the flavor, the macronutrient breakdown per serving of Dymatize’s Whey Iso 100 Protein is as follows:

  • Protein: 25g
  • Carbs: 1-3g
  • Fat: 0-1g
  • Sugar: ≤1g

The flavors with the highest amount of carbs are Dunkin’ Mocha Latte and Fudge Brownie with 3g of carbs. The flavors with the least carbs are Dunkin’s Cappuccino, Fruity Pebbles, and Gourmet Vanilla with 1g of carbs.

With 110 to 120 calories per serving, Dymatize’s Whey Protein allocates 83 to 90% of its calories toward protein.

For reference, a “reasonable” protein powder has 65-75% protein per serving, a “great” protein has 75-85% protein per serving, and an “excellent” one has more than 85% protein per serving.

Therefore, Dymatize has 4 flavors of protein that fall into the “excellent” category (Dunkin’ Cappuccino, Fruity Pebbles, Gourmet Vanilla, and Strawberry).

This is one of the most comparable proteins I’ve seen to Transparent Labs Whey Protein Isolate (click to read my review), which is the gold standard at 93% protein per serving.

With an excellent protein amount per serving, great flavors, and perfect mixability, you can’t go wrong with Dymatize Iso 100 Protein Powder.

Highlights: What I Liked About Dymatize’s Whey Protein

Pros vs Cons of taking Dymatize’s whey protein

It Has A Relatively High Amount Of Protein Per Serving

I love that Dymatize’s Whey Protein has a great to excellent amount of protein per serving (depending on the flavor that you choose) because it means that their products aren’t full of cheap fillers.

I appreciate products that have a higher percentage of protein per serving because I’d rather spend money on a protein powder that is loaded with protein rather than one that is loaded with useless additives.

It Comes In Many Delicious Flavors

I was impressed by the number of flavors that Dymatize had ranging from basic flavors like Vanilla and Chocolate to more exciting flavors like Fruity Pebbles and Dunkin’ Donuts options.

Although I haven’t tried all of the flavors of their whey, I can vouch for the Cocoa Pebble and Cookie and Cream flavors, which are both tasty and doesn’t leave any aftertaste (like some protein powders do that are sweetened with stevia).

Based on customer reviews it appears that all other flavors of Dymatize’s Iso 100 are also delicious. There are very few reviews complaining about its flavor and the ones that do are commenting on it being too sweet for their taste preferences.

However, it’s hard to cater to everyone and personally, I’d rather have a protein powder that’s on the sweeter side so I have no complaints.

Drawbacks: What I Didn’t Like About Dymatize’s Whey Protein

It Is Sweetened With Sucralose Rather Than Just Stevia

The one major drawback of Dymatize’s protein powder is that they didn’t just stick to using stevia as a sweetener, they added sucralose as well and in larger doses than stevia.

I’m disappointed in their use of sucralose because it’s known to cause digestive issues in many individuals.  With that said, I never had an issue with stomach upset after drinking Dymatize Iso 100, but if you know you are sensitive to sweeteners, then your experience might be different.

Most companies have started to phase out their use of artificial sweeteners in place of natural sweeteners like stevia.

What doesn’t make sense is that they did choose to include stevia but they still added sucralose in larger quantities. They could have easily left out the sucralose and had a higher-quality product.

The only logical reason why they would do this is to cut costs because artificial sweeteners are cheaper to manufacture.

The Price of The Protein Varies Greatly Depending On Where You Buy It

What’s strange about Dymatize is that although they have their own website, they don’t sell their own products on their website. When you add a product to your cart it directs you to other websites where you can purchase their products.

This means that the prices of their products will change depending on which retailer you purchase them from.

Online this product seems to range from $1.67 – $3.28 per serving, which is a massive difference.  So I recommend you do your research before purchasing.  It does seem like Amazon is the best place to purchase Dymatize Iso 100 though (click for today’s prices), so that’s a safe bet.

I will also say that this product is much more expensive than the average protein regardless of where you purchase it.

For reference, the average price for a whey protein is $1.34 per serving and although this protein powder is above average, it shouldn’t be priced at the high end of the scale above.

Dymatize’s Whey Protein Review: My Experience

Dymatize’s Whey Protein user experience

Dymatize’s Iso 100 Whey pleasantly surprised me with its flavor, mixability, digestibility, and versatility. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase this protein again, but I would likely only use it after a workout.

I really enjoyed using Dymatize’s protein after I worked out because I’m someone who doesn’t have much of an appetite after working out. Being able to reach for a protein shake that I knew would digest easily and wouldn’t leave me queasy was nice.

I typically go for protein powders that will hold me over for longer like PEScience’s Select Protein (click to read my review), but I could see myself purchasing both and having two different protein powders for two different use cases.

After purchasing Dymatize’s Whey Protein, I tested it by:

  • Mixing it with water
  • Mixing it with milk
  • Baking it into oatmeal
  • Using it to make protein balls
Dymatize’s Whey Protein Baking into oatmeal

In every use case, Dymatize’s whey protein performed as well as I could hope for. I was worried it wouldn’t hold up well in baked goods but it passed the test in my baked oatmeal.

I also enjoyed the fact that it was sweet enough and had enough flavor that I didn’t have to add additional ingredients to my greek yogurt and oatmeal to make it taste better.

Key Takeaway: Overall I was impressed with Dymatize’s Iso 100 Whey Protein and I would purchase it again exclusively for post-workout consumption.

How Does Whey Protein Stack Up Against Our Criteria For Protein Powder

Dymatize ISO100 Hydrolyzed Protein Powder

There are 8 criteria that we take into consideration when evaluating a protein powder, here’s how Dymatize’s Iso 100 Whey Protein performs in each criterion:

1. Nutrition Label Transparency

Rating: 4/5

Dymatize appears to be very transparent with its nutrition label, which I would expect based on the fact that one of its core competencies is “Rigorous Testing”.

They go as far as to say that their “intentions are as pure as [their] formulas. That means no banned substances. No unnecessary ingredients. And no mislabeling. Ever.

The only thing I found strange about the nutrition label for Dymatize Iso 100 is that it has 25g of protein (which is typical for protein powder) but it says that the percentage of Daily Value for 25g is 50%.

This seems ridiculous because it’s stating that people should only aim for 50 grams of protein per day which is insanely low. For this reason, I’m giving them a 4/5 instead of a 5/5.

2. Fat Content Transparency

Rating: 5/5

Dymatize appears to be very transparent with the fat content of their protein, by displaying all of the fat content metrics for each flavor of their whey isolate.

  • Dunkin’ Cappuccino: 0g total fat, 0g saturated fat, 0g trans fat
  • Dunkin’ Mocha Latte: 0.5g total fat, 0g saturated fat, 0g trans fat
  • Fruity Pebbles: 0g total fat, 0g saturated fat, 0g trans fat
  • Cocoa Pebbles: 0.5g total fat, 0g saturated fat, 0g trans fat
  • Birthday Cake Pebbles: 1g total fat, 0g saturated fat, 0g trans fat
  • Gourmet Chocolate: 0.5g total fat, 0g saturated fat, 0g trans fat
  • Gourmet Vanilla: 0g total fat, 0g saturated fat, 0g trans fat
  • Cookies & Cream: 1g total fat, 0g saturated fat, 0g trans fat
  • Chocolate Peanut Butter: 1g total fat, 0g saturated fat, 0g trans fat
  • Fudge Brownie: 1g total fat, 0g saturated fat, 0g trans fat
  • Strawberry: 1g total fat, 0g saturated fat, 0g trans fat

3. Effective Ingredients

Rating: 5/5

Dymatize’s Iso 100 Whey Protein Powder does contain many effective ingredients because it uses whey protein hydrolysate and isolate for faster absorption and it contains 2.6g of leucine per serving to promote muscle growth.

Leucine has been shown to be one of the main drivers of muscle-protein synthesis (a precursor for muscle growth).

Research also suggests that it takes 3 grams of leucine to maximize muscle protein synthesis, so at 2.6g per serving this protein is fairly close to this benchmark.

4. Protein Percent of Calories

Rating: 4/5

Dymatize’s Whey Protein is one of the best protein powders on the market for its percentage of protein per serving, which ranges from 83% to 90% based on the flavor that you get.

If all of the flavors contained 90% protein per serving I would give this product a solid 5/5 but as of right now, there are 7 flavors with 83% protein per serving and only 4 with 90% so I’ve rated it a 4/5.

5. Taste/Flavor

Rating: 5/5

Dymatize’s Iso 100 is a great-tasting protein powder, which is exactly why it received the award for “best chocolate flavor” from 2013-2017.

They have a wide selection of flavors to try and cater to as many taste preferences as they can, which I appreciate. I’m sure there will be people who think this protein powder is too sweet but I’m not one of them.

6. Mixability

Rating: 5/5

I found that the Dymatize Protein mixed extremely well even when mixed in a shaker bottle without a shaker ball, which is impressive.

I’m glad it mixed as well as it did because the company does advertise this protein as being easy to mix, and oftentimes products don’t live up to these claims. I’m happy to report that their claims were accurate.

7. Texture (Thick or Thin)

Rating: Thin

Dymatize’s Iso 100 is a relatively thin protein shake, especially when mixed with water. This isn’t surprising considering it contains little to no fat and doesn’t contain common thickeners like xanthan gum or guar gum.

If you’re looking for a thinner protein shake this is it; however, if you prefer a thicker and creamier shake then this isn’t the best option for you.

8. Satiety

Rating: 2/5

As I expected, Dymatize’s Iso 100 Whey Protein didn’t keep me full for very long. When taken on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, it held me over for about an hour.

I would have been surprised if this protein had held me over for longer considering it’s made with the two fastest-digesting forms of whey.

This protein powder wasn’t designed to be satiating, it was designed to absorb quickly to provide your body with amino acids at a faster rate.

Dymatize Whey Protein Protein Customer Reviews

I enjoyed Dymatize’s Whey Protein but I was curious about what other users thought of this protein powder so I read through Amazon’s reviews of the product to see what others had to say.

Dymatize’s Iso 100 Whey Protein has 4.5/5 stars from 13,148 global ratings, which is an excellent rating considering how many reviews there are. It’s safe to say that this protein powder pleasantly surprised many customers.

Additionally, the reviews on Amazon are organized and given ratings in 5 different categories, the ratings are as follows:

  • Ingredient Quality: 4.3/5
  • Blending Power: 4.3/5
  • Flavor: 4.1/5
  • Value For Money: 3.6/5

One interesting theme among the reviews was how misleading the tub of protein is because you expect that it is going to be at least 3/4 of the way full, but when you actually receive the tub it’s less than half full.

I’m sure this is where the value-for-money rating comes from. If you’re purchasing online and seeing the size of the tub, you expect that you’re paying for a larger quantity than you actually receive.

Key Takeaways: The flavor, ingredient quality, and blending power of Dymatize Iso 100 are top-notch but when it comes to the amount of protein you receive you may be a bit disappointed.

Dymatize Iso 100 Whey Protein Alternatives

Transparent Labs Whey Protein Isolate

Transparent Labs Whey Protein Isolate

The best alternative for Dymatize’s Whey Protein is Transparent Lab’s Whey Protein Isolate because it is another fast-digesting protein that would be ideal after a workout.

Transparent Lab’s Whey goes a step further than Dymatize by offering 93% protein per serving, using grass-fed whey which has more nutritional benefits and sweetening solely with stevia.

Naked Whey

Naked whey protein powder

Another alternative for Dymatize Protein is Naked Whey which is also made with grass-fed whey but is a better option for those who prefer a less sweet protein powder.

The only downside to using Naked Whey as an alternative to Dymatize is that it’s made with whey protein concentrate which digests more slowly than hydrolyzed whey or whey protein isolate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Dymatize Whey Protein’s Shipping Policy?

Dymatize doesn’t sell its own products from a storefront so they do not have a shipping policy. The shipping policy would be that of the retailer that you choose to order from.

What Is Dymatize Whey Protein’s Return Policy?

Dymatize’s return policy will depend on what retailer you choose to order from. Each retailer will likely have a different return policy.

Is Dymatize Whey Protein Third-Party Tested?

Dymatize Iso 100 is third-party tested for banned substances and evaluated for label accuracy and ingredient purity.

Is Dymatize Whey Protein Good For Weight Loss?

Dymatize’s Iso 100 whey protein would be good for weight loss because of its lower calorie content and its higher protein content that encourages muscle retention. However, it wouldn’t be the best option for managing hunger because it digests too quickly.

Is Dymatize Whey Protein Keto Friendly?

Dymatize’s Whey Protein isn’t keto-friendly because it contains up to 3g of carbs per serving; however, it would be considered low-carb. If you’re someone who simply wants to reduce your carb intake rather than be hard-core keto then this is a great option.

Is Dymatize Whey Protein Gluten-Free?

The tub of protein does not specify that it is certified gluten-free but Amazon’s description of the product claims it is gluten-free, so I emailed the company to verify. According to Dymatize its Iso 100 whey protein is gluten-free.

What Are The Best Ways To Mix Dymatize Whey Protein?

Dymatize mixes well with water, milk, greek yogurt, and oatmeal. You could also add it to a smoothie or use it in baking. I haven’t encountered any situation where Dymatize didn’t mix well.

What Flavors Are Available For Dymatize Whey Protein?

Dymatize is currently available in 11 flavors: Dunkin’ Cappuccino, Dunkin’ Mocha Latte, Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles, Birthday Cake Pebbles, Gourmet Chocolate, Gourmet Vanilla, Cookies & Cream, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Fudge Brownie, and Strawberry.

Does Dymatize Whey Protein Make You Gain Weight?

Dymatize’s Iso 100 protein is unlikely to lead to weight gain because it only has 110 to 120 calories per serving. The only way that you would gain weight using this protein is if it resulted in you eating more calories than your body needs to maintain weight.

Can You Use Dymatize Whey Protein As A Meal Replacement?

Dymatize’s whey protein is not a suitable meal replacement because it lacks the calories, carbs, and fat that you need in a meal. One scoop of this protein in a shake could be considered a small snack but it wouldn’t hold you over for long.

When Is The Best Time To Take Dymatize Whey Protein?

The best time to take Dymatize Iso 100 is after a workout because it is an extremely fast-digesting protein powder that delivers amino acids (protein) to your muscles to repair damage and promote muscle growth more quickly.
