What Are the Guidelines For Sodium Consumption?
The guidelines for sodium consumption are between 2,000 mg (2.0 grams) and 2,300 mg (2.3 grams) a day, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The average American adult consumes much more than this because many of the processed and ultra-processed foods that are available in grocery stores and restaurants are packed full of sodium.
Although pickles aren’t ultra-processed foods, they are still processed before arriving at the grocery store. Some manufacturers add extra salt to the product for flavor and preservation.
Choosing low-sodium pickle products means you can continue enjoying your favorite dishes without consuming too much sodium.
What Defines A “Low-Sodium” Pickle Product?
There is no specific number that defines a pickle product as being low in sodium.

Are There No Sodium Pickles?
Generally, all store-bought pickles contain sodium. Even if they contain low amounts of sodium, such as those that I’ve mentioned below, there is still going to be some sodium in the product.

Does Rinsing Pickles Reduce Sodium?
Yes, rinsing your pickles with warm water will reduce their sodium content because it removes the sodium from the outside of the product. This will also reduce the acid content of the pickles, which can shorten the shelf life of the product.
Alternatively, you can soak the pickles in warm water for a couple of hours to reduce the sodium and acid contents. However, if you do soak your pickles, you will need to eat them within a couple of hours as the reduced salt content can make them prone to going bad.
