To help people reduce their sodium intake without cutting out all of their favorite meals and snacks, food manufacturers are now producing low sodium versions of their products.
There has been an increase in the number of low sodium soups on the shelves in recent years and I’m here to tell you which ones to buy. Below, I’ll cover the top 30 low sodium store-bought soups.
But first, I’m going to share exactly what criteria I used to determine “a low sodium soup”.
Guidelines For Sodium Consumption
The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that we should not exceed 2,300 mg of dietary sodium each day.
Despite these recommendations, only 10% of Americans actually stay below this limit.
One study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that the average daily sodium consumption in America is around 3,850 mg and this can have a lot of negative impacts on our physical health.
In particular, regularly exceeding the recommended amount of dietary sodium is closely linked to heart disease, high blood pressure, and chronic kidney disease (CKD). On the other hand, decreasing sodium consumption has been shown to lower blood pressure and improve kidney function.
What Defines A “Low Sodium” Soups?
By law, food manufacturers must disclose the exact amount of sodium that is in their products. Most food labels will state the amount of sodium per serving in milligrams.
A product can be labeled as low sodium when it contains 140 mg or less of sodium per cup . If it contains less than 35 mg of sodium per serving, then it can be labeled as very low sodium. Less than 5 mg per serving and the product is labeled as sodium-free.
However, things are a little different with soups and broths. The average soup contains between 600-700 mg of sodium per half a can.
However, many dietitians, including Brittany Scanniello, RD recommend looking for any soup or broth that is below 460 mg per serving if you are trying to reduce your sodium intake.

Why Should You Buy Low Sodium Soups?
The negative health consequences of excessive sodium intake are caused by sodium’s main functions in the body.
This essential mineral is involved in fluid regulation and when there is too much sodium present in the body, it causes fluid retention. This increases your blood pressure and directly impacts your heart and kidney health.
Alongside potassium, sodium is also essential for nerve and muscle function. It works via the sodium-potassium pump to help nerve cells to communicate with each other and the brain to communicate with the muscles via the nervous system.
Due to the essential role of sodium in the human body, excessive intake can disrupt the above processes. Fluid regulation becomes almost impossible and the central nervous system becomes less efficient at sending signals.
Nearly 1 in 10 cardiovascular deaths are attributed to sodium consumption, and this statistic has been calculated using the data from over 100 studies.
Purchasing low sodium products can significantly reduce your sodium intake so that you can stay with the recommended daily limit. This will prevent dysregulation of your fluid balance or your nervous system, and in turn, will decrease your risk of developing acute or chronic diseases that may be fatal.
