Transparent Labs is known for using clean labels and high-quality ingredients. Their powdered supplements, like whey protein and pre-workout, helped raise the bar for quality, and their Protein+ Bar keeps that same standard.

But this bar can be a little tricky for fitness fans. It makes you choose between great ingredients and the nutrition numbers you might want.

After trying it myself, I found the ingredients are top-notch, but the macros may not match everyone’s goals.

Key Takeaways:

  • Transparent Labs Protein+ Bar has a low protein-to-calorie ratio, with only 21% of its calories coming from protein
  • This bar contains no sugar alcohols or artificial sweeteners. The use of all-natural ingredients makes it exceptionally easy on digestion
  • At $2.99 to $3.33 per bar, this is a significant financial investment for the amount of protein provided (15g).

Overall Rating: 4.3/5

Overview

  • With 15g of protein and 280 calories, this bar has about a 21% protein-to-calorie ratio. Many top-tier protein bars target 35–40%. Since it uses real peanut butter and honey, it’s higher in fats and carbs than typical diet bars.

Features

  • Transparent Labs does not use any artificial ingredients or sugar alcohols in their formula.
  • Uses real ingredients like gluten-free rolled oats, honey, and peanut butter.
  • Good taste and texture

Best For

  • Elite athletes who want to ensure that every bit of their supplement intake is covered by third party testing
  • People who are “Hard Gainers” or are in a bulking phase and want to get more calories in through high-quality, clean sources.
  • Individuals with sensitive stomachs
  • Outdoor enthusiast and athletes who need sustained energy
  • Busy parents, students, entrepreneurs, or anybody who is on-the-go and wants a nutrient-rich, protein-rich snack

About Transparent Labs

Transparent Labs is a Utah-based supplement company that builds its reputation on – as the name suggests – transparency. They are one of few brands that provide 100% formula disclosure, meaning they have no proprietary blends. All of their products are Third-Party Tested with many products having athlete-friendly certifications. Transparent Labs products are gluten-free, and don’t contain artificial sweeteners, food dyes, or preservatives.

While many brands end up prioritizing flavor or cost-cutting, Transparent Labs prioritizes high quality, effective ingredients to maximize results and minimize negative side effects.

Another thing that sets Transparent Labs apart is that they publicly disclose all of the results of their third-party testing, and provide the Certificates of Analysis for their products. This gives you reassurance that:

  1. Your products do not contain any contaminants like heavy metals
  2. Your products actually contain the ingredients they claim to

When I compared the macros on the label to those provided on the Certificate of Analysis, I found that the official testing actually shows slightly more protein and lower carbs and fats than label claims.

Overview of Transparent Labs Protein Bar

Transparent Labs Protein Bar+

Here is the macronutrient breakdown of the Transparent Labs Protein Bar:

  • Calories: 280
  • Protein: 15g
  • Carbohydrates:  23g
  • Fat:  15g
  • Sugar: 10g (5g added sugars)

With 15g of protein and 280 calories, the protein percentage for this bar sits at approximately 21%. To put this in perspective, many “top-tier” protein bars aim for a 35-40% protein-to-calorie ratio. Because this bar relies on real peanut butter and honey, the fats and carbs are significantly higher than more traditional “diet” bars.

Highlights: What I Liked About The Transparent Labs Protein Bar

Transparent Labs Protein Bar+

No Digestive Issues

Transparent Labs does not use any artificial ingredients or sugar alcohols in their formula. By minimizing these ingredients and prioritizing high-quality whey isolate, the result is an easy to digest protein bar.

Many companies use sugar alcohols like erythritol or maltitol which are non-nutritive (zero calories), which allows them to advertise their bars as low sugar. The downside is that these sugar alcohols can cause significant bloating and indigestion.

This bar is also gluten-free and soy-free, which further minimizes potential gut issues.

Whole Food Ingredients

Transparent Labs Protein+ Bar uses real ingredients like gluten-free rolled oats, honey, and peanut butter. This bar tastes like I am eating real food, not a candy bar, and leaves me feeling satisfied with no digestive issues.

While a lot of companies try to create overly-sweet replicas of popular candy bars, Transparent Labs doubles down on their commitment to quality by producing a bar that uses only natural ingredients.

Alongside the peanut butter and protein, you find ingredients like dates, honey, coconut oil, and sea salt.

Good Taste and Texture

Transparent Labs Protein Bar+ texture

Because this bar uses real peanut butter and honey, the texture is chewy and satisfying, lacking that “chemical” aftertaste found in high-protein/low-carb alternatives.

They somehow managed to get chocolate chips that have a gooey, melty texture which makes every bar feel like a treat!

This bar is also great for on-the-go individuals. It does not have a chocolatey coating that melts and makes a mess, but it also freezes well and thaws quickly, maintaining its texture.

Drawbacks: What I Didn’t Like About the Transparent Labs Protein Bar

Low Protein Percentage

With 15g of protein per 280 calories, this bar is only around 21% protein with the other 79% of calories coming from carbs and fats.

If you are in a strict calorie deficit and are trying to maximize protein intake while keeping low overall calories or are trying to adhere to a low carb/low fat diet, this bar might not be the best option.

(Tip: For a high protein, low carb/fat snack option, consider adding a scoop of Transparent Labs protein powder with some plain greek yogurt).

It’s On The Expensive Side

Protein bars in general are an expensive category, costing between $3.00 and $5.00 per bar, compared to scoops of protein which cost between $1.30 and $2.00 per serving, on average.

Protein bars typically have between 15 and 20g per bar, while protein powders tend to have 25-30g per serving.

Overall, if you are looking for a daily way to increase total protein intake, you will be paying almost 3 times as much per gram of protein for a bar compared to a protein powder.

That being said, if you do intend to add protein bars to your diet, Transparent Labs is very reasonably priced when compared to other bars

If you are looking for a protein bar that provides energy and prioritizes high quality, all-natural ingredients, then Transparent Labs offers great value.

If you are looking for a bar to optimize protein percentage or protein intake, Transparent Labs might be out of budget.

Melting Risk

Because of the natural oils and honey, these bars tend to get very soft or oily if left in a gym bag or a hot car.

In my personal experience, this bar travels extremely well.

I took it on hikes and it did get gooey and a little bit oily when left in a hot backpack, but I still found it edible without being messy. With traditional chocolate coated protein bars, I often find that the chocolate coating melts if the bar is left in the car, gym bag, or backpack and can be quite messy.

Transparent Labs Protein Bar Review: My Experience

One distinction I think is important to make is that I would classify this as a high protein energy bar, versus calling it a protein bar.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a set standard definition for this category of supplements, so a lot of it is up to personal interpretation.

Let’s consider other, more traditional “protein bars” like Barebells which offer 20g of protein for 210 calories. This makes the protein percentage of this bar 38%, nearly twice the percentage of the Transparent Labs bar. Quest protein bars offer 20g of protein for as low as 180 calories, meaning 44% of the calories come from protein.

A protein percentage of 35-40% is much more standard among traditional protein bars.

So, as far as that category is concerned, I think that Transparent Labs Protein+ Bars fall short.

That being said, the reason that the other brands have the lower calorie content is because they use artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols in their formulas. While this keeps the calories and carbohydrate content lower, it can cause significant bloating or stomach distress in some individuals.

When I first tried the Transparent Labs Protein+ bars back in 2024, I was in a significant calorie deficit phase which made me a lot more critical of this bar.

I now find myself in more of a maintenance phase and in a new career that has my days much busier with more meetings and less structure. My priority now is to find high-quality, protein rich foods that I can take on the go.

The Transparent Labs Protein+ Bars taste great, digest well, travel easily, and are very satiating. When used as a post-workout snack, between meals, or as a grab-and-go option as I am running my kids to their various activities, I find that these bars give me energy and satiety to get me where I need to go.

Overall, if you are on a budget or are on a strict calorie deficit/low-carb/low fat nutrition plan, then the Transparent Labs Protein+ Bars might not be worth the investment for you.

If your priority is a high quality snack made with all-natural, whole foods that contains protein, then I think Transparent Labs Protein+ Bar makes a great option.

Note: I experimented with this bar making protein ice cream in my Ninja Creami and then chopping this protein bar into small bits to make something similar to a “Cookie Dough Blizzard®”. It tasted delicious, but some of the chunks did get a bit too hard to chew when they were left frozen overnight.

How Does the Transparent Labs Protein Bar Stack Up Against Our Criteria For Protein Supplements?

Transparent Labs Protein Bar+

At FeastGood, we have 6 different criteria for ranking protein bars.  Here’s how Transparent Labs Protein+ Bar stacked up:

Nutrition label transparency

Our rating: 5/5

Transparent Labs sets the standard when it comes to nutrition label transparency.

All ingredients are clearly listed, and the company provides links to the third party testing of their products.

Quality ingredients

Our rating: 5/5

Transparent Labs uses all-natural, whole food ingredients in their bars without any artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.

Furthermore, they use their grass-fed whey isolate protein which is Informed Protein Certified.

Protein percent of calories

Our rating: 2/5

This is my only significant complaint about this bar – compared to other protein bars on the market, Transparent Labs falls short with only 21% of the calories coming from protein.

As mentioned, whether or not this is significant depends on what you are looking for.

If you are looking for a high protein option to add to your day, then this low protein percentage is unappealing when you consider that other protein bars have up to twice the protein percentage that Transparent Labs does. Pushing that even further, a scoop of Transparent Labs protein powder has 28g of protein per $2.00 serving, making it almost 3 times less expensive per gram of protein than the bars.

If, however, you are looking for a high quality, whole food snack that also contains protein, then Transparent Labs is among the best quality options you can find.

Taste/flavor

Our rating: 4.5/5

Transparent Labs Protein+ Bar has a great peanut butter and chocolate flavor without being overly sweet.

In a world where many companies are trying to replicate really sweet candy bars, I appreciated the more natural taste of Transparent Labs Protein+ Bar.

I found it sweet and enjoyable, but not overly so.

Transparent Labs has recently added several flavors to their protein bar lineup, including Chocolate Coconut, Peanut Butter Honey Oat, and Peanut Butter Almond Crunch.

Texture (Hard or Soft)

Our rating: In the middle

Overall I would consider these bars to be soft, but firm.

There is nothing crunchy or “hard” about this bar, but it is not as gooey as some of the protein bars that have a creamy nougat-like centre.

Satiety

Our rating: 4/5

The higher calorie content and the real food ingredients like peanut butter and oats make this bar very satiating.

I used this bar most commonly as an on-the-go breakfast option or a snack to tie me over between lunch and dinner when our family was busy jumping between activities.

I never finished a protein bar and still felt hungry or unsatisfied. I found the bars gave me personally several hours of satiety, perfect for a post-workout snack or an option in between meals.

The Transparent Labs Protein+ Bar is great for:

  • Individuals with sensitive stomachs
  • Outdoor enthusiast and athletes who need sustained energy

  • You are on a tight supplement budget

Transparent Labs Protein Bar Protein Customer Reviews

A trend that I have noticed as a supplement store manager for more than 10 years is that consumers are becoming more educated, more aware, and are demanding more out of supplement companies when it comes to the quality and effectiveness of the products they provide.

Customer reviews online have praised the Transparent Labs Protein+ Bars for the clean ingredients and good digestion. These customers appreciate that in a very saturated market, Transparent Labs stands out by avoiding the use of artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and sugar alcohols.

Quality always comes with a trade-off though. Those high quality ingredients and high-quality testing standards are more expensive. Customers echo my concerns that the cost-to-protein ratio is just too high (with the bars costing $3.33 each if you don’t take advantage of the Subscribe and Save discount available on the Transparent Labs website).

In terms of taste and texture, fans describe these bars as having a “real food” feel, often comparing the consistency to a dense, chewy mix of oats and nut butter rather than the “rubbery” or “chemical” taste found in cheaper bars. Some critics, however, find the texture slightly dry or “chalky,” and others note that the bar’s softer consistency means it can become oily and start to melt if left out in the heat.

Transparent Labs Promotions & Discounts

Transparent Labs offers a Subscribe and Save feature on their website, allowing you to save $4 (10%) off regular price and free shipping.

You can set your reorder frequency to be every 15, 30, or 45 days. You can pause or cancel anytime.

Where To Buy Transparent Labs?

I almost always recommend purchasing from the company directly. If you have any issues with your order, the company is able to provide more support for returns and exchanges when you order from them compared to an online retailer. You are also most likely to find the best deals and best flavor selection when buying directly from the company.

You can find the full selection of Protein+ Bars at Transparentlabs.com.

You can find a limited selection from Amazon.com as well.
