Mr Hyde Signature Pre-Workout is an extremely budget-friendly pre-workout, costing as low as 53 cents per serving (for context, the average cost of pre-workout is $1.61/serving).  But, does the low cost also mean it’s low quality?

  • For performance-enhancing ingredients like creatine, citrulline, and beta-alanine, Mr Hyde does NOT meet clinical dosing standards (i.e. doses that have been proven to be effective through clinical research).
  • Mr Hyde Pre-Workout does, however, contain an effective energy blend that will provide a decent boost without a crash afterward.  The product is also 3rd party-tested, making it a good option for anyone who is concerned with purity.
  • Mr Hyde Pre-Workout is an entry-level pre-workout, ideal for anyone whose key criteria is increased energy at a low cost.  You can get a shot of pre-workout energy cheaper than buying a coffee or energy drink.
  • Experienced lifters might find certain aspects of Mr Hyde underwhelming.  For this group, check out my review of Transparent Labs Bulk, which is my current recommendation for a clinically-dosed pre-workout product.

What Is Mr Hyde Pre Workout?

Mr Hyde Pre Workout

ProSupps offers a variety of pre-workouts including Mr Hyde Nightmare, Hyde Pre-Workout, Hyde Extreme, Hyde Thermo, Hyde Max Pump, and Hyde Signature (which is what I am reviewing in this article).

Mr Hyde Signature is the budget-friendly option on their website, which is why it’s so widely talked about.

It has a combination of ingredients to support energy, mental focus, pump, and strength.

Unfortunately, though, most of these ingredients fall well below clinical dosing standards (more on that below)

With that said, Mr Hyde Signature is still a suitable option for people looking for an energy boost who are on a tight supplement budget.

Hyde Signature is available in 30 or 60 servings (the bigger serving being more cost effective), and comes in Blue Razz Popsicle, Lollipop Punch, Watermelon, and Pixie Dust flavors.

Claims vs Reality:  How I Felt After Taking Mr Hyde Pre-Workout?

Mr Hyde Pre Workout user experienced

Surprisingly, I experienced a pretty good muscle pump when I used this pre-workout, especially for my leg days, and I cannot explain why.

Technically speaking, this product contains such small doses of pump ingredients that I didn’t expect it to provide a muscle pump at all.

The clinical dose of citrulline is between 6000 and 8000mg. Mr Hyde contains 122 mg. The amount of l-citrulline required to improve athletic performance is 50x higher than what’s found in Mr Hyde.

Furthermore, they use a patented ingredient called Nitrosigine ®, aimed at increasing mental focus, which has a clinical dose of 1500mg. The 112mg found in Mr Hyde is 10x lower than recommended.

While I chalk my personal experience with the pump to be possibly attributed to lifestyle factors (I tried this product while I was on holiday consuming a very high-carb diet compared to my typical diet), I didn’t want to disregard it completely in my review.

In reading through some customer reviews, several other customers also expressed enjoying the pump that this product provided, so despite the low quantity of ingredients, it might still be worth trying if you care about muscle pumps.

I found the taste enjoyable (I had the Blue Razz Popsicle flavor) and I appreciated that the flavor wasn’t excessively strong, sour, or sweet. The small scoop size made it easy to drink and mix in a small volume of water.

Mr Hyde provided good energy without jitteriness or a crash afterward, and I found it helped get through my early morning workouts.

There were one or two instances where I felt nauseous after taking Mr Hyde, but it didn’t happen every time. I often take my pre-workouts first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, which was likely a contributing factor to the stomach unrest I felt.

If you experience this, I recommend having a small snack like a piece of toast prior to taking your pre-workout.

Watch Out For Discrepancy On Ingredient Labels

The product that arrived on my doorstep did not match the ingredient list that was available on the company website for “Mr Hyde Signature Pre-Workout”.

For clarity, here is the ingredient label for the product I received versus the product on the website:

Mr Hyde Signature Ingredients
I Received
On the Website

I reached out to ProSupps to get clarity about why my formula is different, and which one customers can expect to get if they order off the ProSupps website.

The answer I received was:

[The one you have is] our older version of Hyde Signature and also our Canadian version. Still very effective and a great product overall!”

As often happens with companies who distribute globally, they carry various product versions as different countries have different regulations around specific ingredients.

Even though it’s not uncommon for products to have different formulas distributed under the same name, it was still a surprise that I did not get the version advertised on the website.

On the ProSupps website, the newer formula of Hyde Signature has higher doses of citrulline, beta-alanine, choline, and Nitrosigine®, and a lower dose of creatine monohydrate (I have an entire section on ingredients next).

The end result is a product that is more focused on pump and endurance and less focused on strength.

Despite there being higher doses of certain ingredients in the “new formula”, they still fall below clinically effective dosages.

Below, I will highlight the differences between the two formulas to help you best understand the effects you can expect from either version.

It’s important to note, that I have no way of guaranteeing which version you’ll receive.  Pro Supps did not confirm whether they’re phasing out the “old formula” or not.

Creatine Monohydrate

Creatine is an amino acid that plays a key role in one of the body’s primary energy systems used during exercise.

By supplementing with creatine and saturating your body’s levels, you have more potential energy stored that can lead to increases in strength and performance.

Supplementing with creatine has been proven to increase muscle performance in short-duration, high-intensity exercises like weight lifting or sprinting.

Hyde Signature Series contains 2.5g of creatine monohydrate, with the newer updated formula having only 1g of creatine. This falls short of clinical dosing standards and will require you to take extra creatine on the side.

Beta-Alanine

Beta-alanine is an amino acid that plays a key role in creating carnosine in the body.

Carnosine is important because it acts as a buffer in the body, helping to buffer the hydrogen ions that build up in muscle tissue and cause fatigue.

Supplementing with beta-alanine can increase muscle carnosine levels by 15-85%. This extra carnosine will help delay fatigue allowing you to work out harder for longer periods of time.

Beta-alanine should be taken over the long term (2+ weeks) on a daily basis just like creatine in order to see the full benefit.

Current research puts the optimal dose at 3-6g daily for 4-10 weeks, with a maintenance dose of 1.2g daily afterward.

Hyde Signature Series contains 1.5g of beta-alanine, which is not sufficient for a loading phase but is sufficient for a maintenance dose.

The new formula has 2g of beta-alanine per scoop which is an improvement but still falls below clinical dose standards.

Beta-alanine comes with a side effect called paresthesia, which is a tingling of the skin. The side-effect is not harmful, and some users love the feeling while others report that it makes them feel distracted or uncomfortable.

Caffeine

Caffeine is a stimulant that speeds up the mental nervous system, increases alertness and mood, and can delay exhaustion.

When taken prior to exercise, caffeine can improve nearly every aspect of exercise performance including HIIT training performance, muscular endurance, strength, power, and cardio

Mr Hyde Signature Series contains 196mg of caffeine per serving, equal to approximately one medium (16oz) coffee. The caffeine content is similar across both formulas.

While everyone’s caffeine tolerance is an individual experience, the amount found in Mr Hyde should be reasonable for most users in that it should provide good energy without excessive jitteriness or anxiety.

The FDA recommends a safe upper limit of 400mg of caffeine per day. Mr Hyde Signature falls well below that amount, allowing for you to consume other sources of caffeine in your day, like coffee or an energy drink, while staying below the FDA’s safe limit.

L-Citrulline

Citrulline is an amino acid that acts as a nitric oxide enhancer, meaning it can increase nitric oxide levels in the body.

Nitric Oxide helps to dilate and constrict the body’s blood vessels, allowing for improved blood flow to the muscles. It can also support cardiovascular health.

It’s theorized that supplementing with citrulline may delay fatigue, increase endurance and strength, and boost recovery. The current research on citrulline specifically as a pre-workout supplement is inconsistent, and more research is needed to definitively say whether it is beneficial.

Many users enjoy taking high doses of L-Citrulline for its muscle pump effects.

Based on the current research available, the optimal dose of L-Citrulline appears to be 6000-8000 mg taken approximately 1 hour prior to exercise.

Mr Hyde Signature contains 122 mg of L-Citrulline. The clinical dose is roughly 50 times higher than what’s found in this Mr Hyde formula, and it is unlikely to provide any noticeable benefit.

The updated formula of Mr Hyde Signature has 500mg of L-Citrulline, still below clinical standards.

Nitrosigine®

Nitrosigine® is a patented ingredient that has been formulated specifically to boost nitric oxide in the body (similar to L-Citrulline).

Nitrosigine ® has also been proven to improve working memory and cognitive function, which can boost mental focus during exercise.

According to Nutrition21, the company behind Nitrosigine®, it’s been clinically studied in more than 30 studies. You can see an infographic summarizing the results of these studies here

The clinical dose of Nitrosigine ® is 1.5g daily.

Mr Hyde Signature contains 250 mg of Nitrosigine®, well below the clinical dose standard. This low dose is unlikely to contribute to significant increases in mental focus or pump.

The updated formula has 500mg of Nitrosigine®, which is an improvement but still technically below the recommended clinical dose.

Choline

In pre-workout supplements, choline is occasionally added to act as a nootropic, enhancing acetylcholine levels in the body, which can result in improved mental focus.

Most of the research so far appears to show that choline supplementation is not largely beneficial in pre-workouts.

Most light or moderate-intensity exercise will not decrease choline levels enough to require supplementation. Even during strenuous and prolonged physical activity, choline supplementation seems minimally beneficial, at best

Doses as low as 50-100 mg daily are recommended for users who are starting to take it for the first time, and slowly building from there.

A full daily dose of 250-500mg is recommended for general health purposes, and doses up to 1000-2000 mg are recommended for enhancing cognitive function.

Mr Hyde Signature contains 100mg of choline, falling short of any clinical dose. The updated formula has 500mg of choline, meeting the recommended dose for supporting general health.

N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine

N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine, or NALT, is a form of L-tyrosine that has better solubility in water, making it more effective as a supplement.

Tyrosine is an amino acid that is a precursor to dopamine and norepinephrine and may improve cognitive function in as little as one single dose.

It’s theorized that tyrosine can delay fatigue when taken as a pre-workout by increasing the activity of catecholamines (hormones that play various roles including increasing muscle strength and mental alertness).

So far, however, the research has yet to prove tyrosine effective in doses lower than 2000mg, which is what is typically found in pre-workouts.

The studies that assessed tyrosine as a pre-workout enhancer used doses of 100-150mg per kg of body weight. This translates to between 7-10g for a 150lb individual.

Anecdotally, many fitness professionals find a dose of 500-2000mg taken 30-60 minutes prior to exercise to be effective for a short-term cognitive boost.

The amount of NALT found in Mr Hyde Signature is 26mg, nowhere near any clinical doses. Despite being the more absorbable form of Tyrosine, the amount found in Mr Hyde Signature is unlikely to provide any real benefit.

TeaCrine®

TeaCrine® is a patented form of theacrine, a compound that is similar to caffeine.

Theacrine works by stimulating the central nervous system, similar to caffeine. The difference between caffeine and theacrine, however, is that the half-life of theacrine is around 20 hours.

This is a very slow-releasing form of caffeine, meaning that 20 hours after ingestion, half of the amount of theacrine you take will still be circulating in your system. Traditional caffeine has a half-life of around 5 hours.

When paired with caffeine pre-workout, theacrine can increase endurance and cognitive function.

All of the studies listed on the TeaCrine® website used doses of 125mg of TeaCrine ® paired with ~150mg of caffeine.

Mr Hyde Signature contains 26mg of TeaCrine®, not nearly a high enough dose to elicit a significant result, but it will still technically provide some energy (a little bit less than a can of Coke, which has 34mg).

The dose of TeaCrine® is cut in half in the updated formula of Mr Hyde Signature, with only 16mg.

Niacin

Niacin, or Vitamin B3, plays some key roles in the body including converting nutrients to energy and supporting circulation and cellular health.

It has unique vasodilating properties that can support blood flow but cause a skin warming or tingling sensation known as a niacin flush. This usually happens around the face and ears in high doses (50mg or more).

Research looking at niacin as a pre-workout supplement has provided mixed results at best.

For the most part, the results are that niacin does not improve athletic performance, with one study finding that niacin supplementation actually decreased exercise performance

There is no clinical dose for niacin, but the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) is 16mg for men and 14mg for women.

With a 14mg dose per serving, the amount of niacin found in Mr Hyde Signature may support general health but is unlikely to contribute to a substantial workout boost.

This ingredient was removed in the updated Mr Hyde Signature formula.

GABA

GABA (aka gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a neurotransmitter that can support growth hormone levels and is commonly used to support mood, sleep quality, and lower stress.

When taken as part of a pre-workout, GABA can help lower the anxiety or jitteriness that can come with taking caffeinated products and promote a calm mental focus.

There is no clinical dose established for GABA as a pre-workout supplement or exercise performance enhancer.

For reducing stress levels, a typical dose of GABA is around 1500 mg. For supporting growth hormone levels, the dose is between 3000mg and 5000mg.

Mr Hyde Signature contains 13 mg of GABA, nowhere near a high enough dose to promote relaxation or hormone support.

Highlights: What I Like About  Mr Hyde Pre-Workout

Pros vs Cons of Mr Hyde Pre-Workout

Good Energy

Mr Hyde Signature series provides good enough amount of energy for me to get through my workout enthusiastically and there was no noticeable crash afterward.

Mr Hyde Signature uses two different types of caffeine (caffeine anhydrous and dicaffeine malate). These two caffeines absorb at different rates, resulting in a prolonged energy with little to no crash afterward.

Because the ingredients that can provide a strong feeling of mental focus are in such small quantities, I didn’t experience the same intensity of mental focus that I have felt with other pre-workouts.

Third-Party Tested

Mr Hyde Signature is third-party tested and Informed Choice Certified, making it a viable option for any drug-tested athletes.

This extra third-party testing ensures that the product is free from banned substances and is an extra insurance policy for elite athletes.

For more recreational users, this adds an extra layer of confidence that the product contains high-quality ingredients and that the ingredients within the product match what is written on the label.

Inexpensive

Mr Hyde Signature provides high-quality ingredients at an incredibly reasonable price. Even if you take a 2-scoop serving of this pre-workout, the total cost is still below the average cost of a single serving of pre-workout.

In evaluating over 50 different pre-workouts, we found the average cost to be around $1.61 per scoop.

Mr Hyde Signature costs anywhere from $0.53 to $0.67 per scoop, depending on which size of container you buy and whether you take advantage of the subscribe and save feature.

Even if you double scoop (which experienced pre-workout users might opt to do), the most expensive size option of Mr Hyde Signature, the cost comes out to $1.33 per serving.

Drawbacks What I Did Not Like About  Mr Hyde Pre Workout

Artificial Coloring

Mr Hyde Signature contains artificial food dyes like FD&C Blue #1. Food dyes have been associated with a variety of adverse health outcomes, and some individuals find they’re especially sensitive to these ingredients.

In ProSupp’s defense, and to their credit, while I was browsing the review section on their website, they replied to a comment that was complaining about the use of artificial coloring in their products.

ProSupps let the reviewer know that they were removing all of the artificial coloring from their products moving forward (but didn’t specify exactly how soon that would be).

Contains Zero Clinically Dosed Ingredients

For every ingredient found in Mr Hyde Signature, there is either insufficient research to provide a clinical dose, or the ingredients fall significantly short of clinical dose standards.

Adding these ingredients allows Mr Hyde Signature to advertise that it enhances pump, focus, endurance, and energy.

The reality is that the majority of the results/benefits will come from the energy blend and the performance benefits associated with caffeine.

The extremely low doses of the performance-based ingredients make it unlikely that the user will experience a substantial performance boost.

How Does  Mr Hyde Signature Pre-Workout Stack Up Against Our Criteria For Pre Workouts

Mr Hyde Pre Workout

Price

Our rating: 5/5

The cost is definitely the most appealing attribute for Mr Hyde Signature.

Taste

Our rating: 5/5

Mr Hyde Signature has a sweet, juice-like flavor that masks the naturally sour and bitter taste of the raw ingredients.

Since Hyde Signature has a really small scoop size (7.2g) with a low dose of total ingredients (it only has about 5g of active ingredients), it’s much easier to make a product that tastes great.

Many raw ingredients taste naturally sour or bitter. If a company uses high, clinical doses of these ingredients then it becomes difficult to mask their natural properties.

For customers who are sensitive to taste or don’t want products that are sour, or find that most pre-workouts on the market taste gross or bitter, Mr Hyde provides a sweet alternative.

Mixability

Our rating: 5/5

Mr Hyde Signature mixes up completely and easily in very small amounts of water (4-6oz) making it a great option for anyone who is sensitive to texture.

In the same way that a small amount of ingredients makes a product easy to flavor well, a smaller scoop size makes it easier to dissolve, even in small volumes of water.

Energy

Our rating: 3.5/5

The energy provided by Mr Hyde Signature is reasonable, with 196mg of total caffeine per scoop. The combination of different caffeine sources provides an energy that is long-lasting with no crash.

Technically speaking, when compared to other pre-workouts on the market, Mr Hyde falls on the lower end of total caffeine intake with many products falling between 250 and 300mg of caffeine per serving.

Despite advertising its “laser focus”, with a lack of additional nootropics and ingredients to enhance mental focus, Mr Hyde Signature doesn’t provide a noticeable boost outside of the typical caffeine energy.

Even still, the energy boost from Mr Hyde Signature was enough to help me get up for my 6am workouts and see good results in the gym with no jitteriness or crash.

Pump

Our rating: 3/5

Despite the low dose of pump-enhancing ingredients, I can’t deny that I noticed a significant muscle pump during some of my high-volume resistance training sessions.

I can’t say for sure if this was because of the pre-workout itself, or because I was testing it during a time when my carbohydrate intake was higher than normal.

The dose of pump ingredients is higher in the new formula of Hyde compared to the one I tried, increasing the likelihood that you can experience a decent pump from this product.

If you try it and feel like the muscle pump isn’t where you want it to be, you can consider adding additional l-citrulline powder or pairing Hyde Signature Series with Hyde Max Pump Pre-Workout

Strength

Our rating: 1/5

The only ingredient found in Mr Hyde Signature aside from caffeine that can play a role in muscle strength is creatine, and neither version of Mr Hyde Signature has a significant enough dose to provide a real benefit.

To be fair, Mr Hyde Signature doesn’t advertise anywhere that it is a formula that will drastically improve strength.

Who Should Take Mr Hyde Pre-Workout?

Mr Hyde Signature Pre-workout is for:

  • People whose number one priority is keeping the cost of their pre-workout low
  • Athletes who require their products to be Informed-Sport Certified or third-party tested
  • People who are sensitive to gritty textures or want a product that tastes good
  • People who want to prioritize “energy” over other aspects of pre-workout

Who Should Not Take  Mr Hyde Pre Workout?

I would not recommend Mr Hyde Signature Pre-Workout:

  • People who prioritize strength, power, and endurance aspects of pre-workout over energy
  • Anyone who wants clinical doses of their pre-workout ingredients

What Are Other Customers Saying About Mr Hyde Pre Workout?

There are only 34 total reviews for Mr Hyde Signature on the ProSupps website, which is a very small sample size. On the website, Hyde Signature has a 4.5/5 star rating overall.

Of the few reviews, customers praise the long-lasting energy they get from Mr Hyde and are grateful that they don’t get a crash afterward.

Of the 4 reviews that gave a 2-star review or lower, two of them complained about the food dyes found within the product and not the product itself. ProSupps responded to the customers’ comments letting them know that they would be removing the artificial colors moving forward, so soon this issue will be a moot point.

Flipping over to Amazon where the product has almost 12,000 total reviews provides us a much more reliable sample size.

On Amazon, Hyde Signature Pre-Workout has a 4.3/5 star rating. The product is most highly rated for its flavor, longevity, value, ingredient quality, and as being good for beginners.

The written reviews were all quite similar, describing how they really liked the taste, felt like they got a decent pump, and didn’t feel jittery or experience a crash afterward.

One commenter noted that they enjoyed it, but found that it became less effective over time with its potency wearing off after about a month.

I thought this was a really interesting thing to touch on, and I think it’s reflective of the doses and types of ingredients used in Mr Hyde. The only ingredient that is really found in a significant dose is caffeine, which is something that the body can build up a tolerance to.

Without adequate amounts of support ingredients for pump, endurance, and mental focus, it’s very possible for you to feel that this product loses its effectiveness quite quickly.

Mr Hyde Pre Workout Alternatives?

HYDE

For experienced pre-workout users who find the Mr Hyde Signature formula to be too mild and underdosed, you might consider trying ProSupps alternative formula, HYDE.

The very first thing I want to differentiate is that Mr Hyde Signature is Informed-Sport Certified and safe for athletes, but HYDE is not.

HYDE contains 375mg of caffeine, nearly double what is found in Mr Hyde Signature. It also features two additional stimulants in Senactiv® and Yohimbe.

Both products contain similar amounts of beta-alanine (2 grams). In place of the creatine found in Mr Hyde Signature, HYDE features a full clinical dose of Nitrosigine® for increased pump and mental focus, and CellFlo6™ , an ingredient that supports muscle recovery and weight management.

HYDE costs around $1.50 per serving and is available in 4 flavors: Blue Freeze, Solar Punch, Tropic Cyclone, and Pixie Storm.

Dr. Jekyll

We can’t talk about Mr. Hyde without mentioning his alter ego, Dr. Jekyll.

Dr. Jekyll Signature is a blend that provides support in three categories: athletic performance, mental focus, and adaptogens.

This pre-workout is stimulant-free making it an ideal option for anybody who likes ProSupps and their products but wants to work out late in the evening or is choosing to avoid caffeine.

Like Mr Hyde, Dr Jekyll is Informed Choice certified and safe for elite athletes.

It contains creatine and beta-alanine, as well as a patented form of arginine which will work together to support endurance, strength, and pump.

The combination of their mental focus blend and their adaptogenic matrix will support a calm focus and enhance recovery.

Both Mr Hyde and Dr Jekyll miss out on clinical dose standards for a lot of ingredients on their own, but they can also be stacked together to help hit clinical dose standards and really complement each other.

Dr Jekyll is available in 30 servings and costs around $0.77 per serving. It only comes in blueberry lemonade flavor.

Transparent Labs Bulk

Transparent Labs Bulk

If you value the characteristics of Mr Hyde Signature like third-party testing and high-quality ingredients, and you have a little bit more wiggle room in your supplement budget then you might opt for Transparent Labs Bulk.

Transparent Labs delivers on quality, has fully disclosed testing results, is Informed Choice Certified, and uses no artificial flavors, colors, or sweeteners.

It does come at a higher price, around $1.66 per serving ($1.50 per serving with the subscribe and save option).

The biggest differences between Mr Hyde Signature and Transparent Labs Bulk are the quantities of the ingredients provided.

Transparent Labs Bulk has the same 200mg of caffeine that Mr Hyde Signature has, but it has a full clinical dose of:

  • Citrulline (8g)
  • Beta-alanine (4g)
  • Betaine (2.5g)
  • Taurine (1.3g)
  • Alpha-GPC (300mg)
  • L-Theanine (200mg)

The end result is a product that delivers on energy, mental focus, pump, and endurance without jitteriness or a crash afterwards.

Transparent Labs Bulk comes in 30 servings and 7 flavor options: Strawberry Kiwi, Pina Colada, Blue Raspberry, Black Cherry, Peach Mango, Tropical Punch, and Sour Grape.

Are There Any Promos or Discounts For Mr Hyde Pre Workout?

ProSupps offers a subscribe and save feature on their website that saves you a very generous 20%. This is higher than many other companies who offer anywhere from 5-15% off of their products.

The downside to ProSupps’ subscription is that you cannot select your shipping frequency. Items are automatically shipped every 30 days.

You can cancel your subscription at any time.

You can also find a page titled Stacks and Bundles where ProSupps provides pre-built combo packs with built-in savings.
