Gorilla Mode Pre-Workout is a highly dosed pre-workout that includes ingredients to support pump, strength, endurance, energy, and mental focus.
Gorilla Mode advertises as a 40-serving product and provides the ingredient information for a single and double scoop serving.
To get clinical doses of key performance ingredients like citrulline, creatine, and betaine, a two-scoop serving is required.
This pre-workout also uses ingredients that are common to pre-workouts but don’t have enough research behind them as ergogenic aids to have clinical doses established. This includes glycerol, l-tyrosine, agmatine, and kanna.
Despite not having clinical doses for the ingredients above, Gorilla Mode Pre does contain high doses of each ingredient relative to what is commonly found in other pre-workouts.
When taking a 2 scoop serving, Gorilla Mode has 325mg of caffeine, putting it in the “high stimulant” category. .
Gorilla Mode is available in 15 different flavors, including Cherry Blackout (the one I personally tested), Cotton Candy Grape, Pina Colada, and some uniquely named ones like Krush, Tiger’s Blood, and Volcano Burst.
Gorilla Mode Pre falls at the high end of the spectrum for cost, running $2.50 per 2-scoop serving. For reference, we calculated the average cost of more than 50 different pre-workouts and found the average cost to be $1.61, with the most expensive costing $3.00.
Claims vs Reality: How I Felt After Taking Gorilla Mode Pre?
When I saw the ingredient list, I expected this to be a hard-hitting, mind-blowing pre-workout.
I wasn’t necessarily disappointed in this pre-workout, but I wasn’t blown away either.
As recommended by the product, I started with just a single scoop to assess my individual tolerance.
While I am no stranger to high doses of caffeine, this pre-workout does use an ingredient that isn’t approved in my country (Canada), N-Phenethyl Dimethylamine, and I wasn’t sure how I would react to it.
Honestly, I didn’t feel anything at all on a single scoop serving. I did get a slight energy boost from the 175mg of caffeine, which I need since I am getting up at 5:30 in the morning for my workouts.
But aside from a little bit of alertness, I did not get a noticeable strength boost or muscle pump from the single scoop serving.
Over the following few workouts, I spent some time at 1.5 scoops before jumping straight into the 2 scoop serving.
While the 1.5-2 scoop serving did have a more noticeable energizing and muscle pump effect, this is also when I started to notice some very uncomfortable side effects.
Approximately 45-60 minutes after taking this pre-workout, I had a very uneasy stomach and had to make some sudden bathroom breaks. This didn’t happen every single time, but it did happen about 75% of the time for me.
I tried experimenting with different strategies in the morning, like trying this on an empty stomach and with various snacks. The side effects were the same, no matter which strategy I used.
My best guess as to why comes down to N-Phenethyl Dimethylamine (aka Eria Jarensis).
The upset stomach/diarrhea side effect has only been prominent for me with one other product called Wrecked. When I compared ingredients, Wrecked pre-workout also contained Eria Jarensis.
Since I have used nearly all of the other ingredients known to contribute to nausea or upset stomach (creatine and glycerol) in the past in very high doses with no side effects, I am left to assume that Eria Jarensis is the key culprit here.
Stomach issues aside, I noticed reasonable strength and energy from Gorilla Mode, but wasn’t blown away.
I completed my prescribed reps, weight, and sets, but my RPE (rating of perceived exertion) was higher this week than others, and it felt like more of a grind to do my usual workouts.
Overall, I enjoyed the muscle pump from Gorilla Mode, but this pre-workout isn’t at the top of my “re-buy” list, especially given the uncomfortable side effects and high cost per serving. My go-to pre-workout is still Transparent Labs Bulk.
If you’re keen to try Gorilla Mode because you like the formula (detailed below), I recommend starting with a single scoop and slowly increasing your dosage over several weeks.

Citrulline acts as a nitric oxide enhancer, which can increase levels of nitric oxide in the body.
Nitric oxide helps the body to dilate and constrict its blood vessels which can, in turn, improve blood flow to the muscles and support cardiovascular health.
When taken before exercise, citrulline may help delay fatigue during high-intensity exercise, increase strength and endurance, and improve recovery.
Many users enjoy using nitric oxide boosters like citrulline as they can provide an aesthetic muscle pump.
More definitive research is needed since many current studies looking at citrulline use inconsistent methods and have some quality control issues. So far, it looks like the optimal dose of creatine is 6000-8000mg taken one hour prior to exercise.
A 2–scoop serving of Gorilla Mode contains 9000mg of citrulline, meeting clinical dosing standards.
Creatine Monohydrate
Creatine is one of the most widely studied sports supplements in the world, and has been thoroughly proven to increase athletic performance during short-duration, high-intensity exercise like resistance training or sprinting.
To see the optimal benefits from creatine, you want to fully saturate the body by taking creatine daily over the long term. This saturation can be achieved by taking 3-5g daily, with full saturation occurring after about 4 weeks.
To get this saturation quicker, you can do a loading phase of 20-25g daily for 5-7 days, followed by a maintenance dose of 3-5g daily afterward. This loading phase increases your risk of adverse side effects like bloating or nausea.
With a full 5g of creatine per 2-scoop serving, Gorilla Mode meets clinical dose standards.
GlycerPump ™
Glycerol is a compound that can help to increase the total volume of water in the body.
Most studies surrounding glycerol have been used for rehydrating or hyperhydrating athletes who exercise for extended durations (several hours) or in intense heat.
This hyperhydration strategy involves ingesting around 1.2g of glycerol per kg of body weight dissolved in 26ml of liquid per kg of bodyweight over a period of 60 minutes.
For a 175lb person, this would translate to nearly 95g of glycerol dissolved in approximately 2L of water. This is an incredibly large dose, well above the doses that are commercially available in pre-workout supplements which fall closer to 1-3g.
For day-to-day hydration, it is estimated that a lower dose of 0.125g per kg of glycerol in 5ml/kg of fluid is sufficient. For a 175lb individual, this translates to around 10g of glycerol dissolved in 1.5 cups of water.
While more definitive research is needed to establish if smaller doses of glycerol are effective at increasing hydration, recovery, or strength, many users anecdotally enjoy the nice muscle pump that comes with glycerol supplementation.
Glycerol supplementation can have side effects including headaches, thirst, dizziness, or nausea.
Gorilla Mode pre-workout contains 3g of glycerol, which is a very generous dose compared to other pre-workouts on the market that usually have 1-2g per scoop. It still technically falls below clinical dose standards, though.
Malic Acid
Malic acid is often used in the food industry to enhance the sweetness or tartness of juice, soft drinks, or candies.
Malic acid can stimulate the production of ATP, the body’s energy molecule. In some studies using rats, a deficiency of malic acid has been hypothesized to be a significant cause of physical exhaustion.
Furthermore, a workout drink rich in malic acid was shown to potentially improve endurance and reduce fatigue in cyclists.
As such, malic acid can be added to pre-workout supplements to help ward off fatigue and exhaustion. You can find malic acid either on its own or paired with L-citrulline (called citrulline malate).
There is not enough definitive research done on humans to be able to establish an effective dose.
Betaine Anhydrous
Betaine supports liver function and has a role in making carnitine, a substance that converts fat to energy.
Betaine has shown some promise in improving muscular strength and power, though studies are producing mixed results. However, there is more evidence that betaine can help improve body composition by increasing lean mass and reducing fat mass in active adults.
To see the optimal benefits of betaine, it should be taken daily over a several-week period at a dose of 2.5g daily.
Gorilla mode contains 2.5g of betaine per 2-scoop serving, meeting clinical dose standards.
L-Tyrosine
Supplementing with L-tyrosine may even improve cognitive function after just one single dose. When taken before exercise, tyrosine may help delay time to fatigue.
The issue with tyrosine as a supplement is that it hasn’t been thoroughly studied in humans in smaller doses. Studies showing tyrosine to increase athletic performance have used doses of 100-150mg per kg of bodyweight.
This translates to between 7 and 10g of tyrosine for a 150lb individual, well above the 1-3g typically found in pre-workout supplements.
Despite the lack of clinical research, there is a lot of anecdotal support in favor of L-Tyrosine increasing endurance and cognitive performance during physical activity.
While the dose of tyrosine found in Gorilla Mode (1.5g) technically falls below clinical dose standards, it falls within a common range typically used in pre-workout supplements and may support physical and mental performance.
Agmatine Sulfate
Agmatine is made from the amino acid, arginine, a common vasodilator.
Agmatine also functions as a neurotransmitter in the brain and can stimulate the release of luteinizing hormone.
For these reasons, agmatine supplementation may increase mental focus, elevate mood, and have a positive impact on testosterone levels, leading to muscle growth.
While this sounds great, most of the studies on agmatine have been done on rats, so we can’t necessarily assume the results will be the same in humans.
Due to the lack of available research, there is no established clinical dose of agmatine. The current estimation is that a dose of 1.6-6.4mg per kg of body weight daily is required to boost cognitive performance.
For a 175lb person, this dose equates to between 125 and 500mg.
Gorilla Mode exceeds the doses used in rat studies, providing 1000mg of agmatine per 2-scoop serving.
Kanna
Kanna is usually taken before a stressful event or endeavor.
One study evaluated the effects of kanna supplementation on mood, visual tracking, and reaction time in men and women. While no significant differences were found in mood or visual acuity, there was a noticeable improvement in cognitively demanding reactive tasks.
Kanna is also available in a patented form called Zembrin ®, which showed improvements to recovery (reduced feelings of muscle soreness) and positive effects on mood.
Suffice it to say, more research is needed to be able to definitively outline the benefits of kanna supplementation before exercise, but early indications show improvements in mood as well as stress reduction.
There is currently no clinically established dose or frequency for Kanna.
Gorilla Mode Pre-Workout contains 500mg of Kanna per 2-scoop serving. The studies above that looked at Kanna as an ergogenic aid used 25mg daily, meaning that Gorilla Mode far exceeds the clinical doses.
Caffeine
Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant that increases alertness and mood and can delay fatigue.
When taken prior to exercise, caffeine can potentially increase nearly every aspect of exercise including HIIT training, strength, power, and aerobic performance.
Possible side effects of caffeine consumption include jitteriness, anxiety, heart palpitations or anxiety.
Each person will react differently to caffeine, so there isn’t one single effective dose. Gorilla Mode contains 350mg of caffeine per 2-scoop serving, which is close to the FDA’s recommended safe upper limit of 400mg daily.
N-Phenethyl Dimethylamine Citrate
N-Phenetyl Dimethylamine is the chemical name for the stimulant that comes from a plant called Eria Jarensis.
It can increase dopamine levels in the brain and increase mental focus and concentration.
There is no clinical dose as a pre-workout supplement, but it is typically sold in 75mg-150mg doses.
Gorilla Mode contains 350mg of N-Phenethyl Dimethylamine Citrate per 2-scoop serving, which makes it very likely that you will experience the nootropic benefits from this ingredient.
Bioperine®
Bioperine®, or piperine, is commonly called black pepper extract. Bioperine is found in nearly every pre-workout available on the market because of its ability to increase nutrient absorption.
Clinical trials found Bioperine ® was able to increase nutrient absorption by up to 30%, meaning that the ingredients in your pre-workout can be better absorbed, increasing your workout performance.
The clinical dose of Bioperine® is 5-10mg daily. Gorilla Mode meets clinical dose standards with a 10mg dose per 2 scoop serving.
Huperzine
Huperzine can increase the levels of a chemical messenger called acetylcholine in the brain. The hypothesis is that supplementing with huperzine can improve memory and cognitive function.
Despite its popularity in pre-workout supplements and nootropics, researchers have been unable to show a link between huperzine and increased exercise performance.
Despite the lack of evidence, trials that do use huperzine have used a dose of 200mcg taken before exercise. Gorilla Mode meets and exceeds these standards with 400mcg in a 2-scoop serving.
Highlights: What I Like About Gorilla Mode Pre
Good Energy With No Crash
With 325mg of caffeine and added ingredients like Eria Jarensis, Kanna, and Huperzine which help to boost mental focus, Gorilla Mode provides a really good energy with no subsequent crash.
I was worried that by having all of the caffeine just from one quick-acting source (anhydrous) that there would be a significant crash afterward.
I didn’t feel the same kind of all-day energy that I had noticed from other pre-workouts, but I also wasn’t crashing so hard after my workout that I was napping on my desk before work.
Great Muscle Pump
Gorilla Mode contains 9g of citrulline and 3g of glycerol (per 2 scoop serving), which deliver a great muscle pump.
The muscle pump provided by Gorilla Mode was one of my favorite features. I didn’t feel exceptional strength or stamina, but I did feel like I got a phenomenal muscle pump during my resistance training workouts.
Clinical Doses
When taking a 2-scoop serving, Gorilla Mode provides clinical doses of citrulline (9g), creatine monohydrate (5g), and betaine anhydrous (2.5g). These ingredients have been proven to benefit pump, strength, and body composition.
Clinical doses provide extra reassurance that the money you invest into this pre-workout will provide a noticeable performance benefit.
Drawbacks What I Did Not Like About Gorilla Mode Pre
Causes Stomach and Digestive Upset
While this side effect might not affect every user, for most of the workouts, when I took a full 2 scoop serving of Gorilla Mode, I developed a gurgly stomach and had to make emergency trips to the bathroom on very short notice.
As I mentioned, this might not be an issue for everyone. This hasn’t happened with very many pre-workouts that I have tried in the past.
Doesn’t Taste the Greatest
I specifically tested the Cherry Blackout flavor. It didn’t taste terrible, but it wasn’t a product that I looked forward to drinking every morning. I found it had a pretty bitter taste overall.
Taste is a very personal experience, and with 15 different flavor options, you will likely be able to find a flavor that you enjoy.
I tend to think that I have a very generous palate when taking pre-workout supplements in that I find most pre-workouts taste reasonably good.
If taste and texture are a big priority for you, I might consider skipping Gorilla Mode.
Expensive Cost Per Serving
On the surface, Gorilla Mode looks to provide a appealing cost per serving. At 40 servings, Gorilla Mode Pre costs $1.25 per serving. To get clinical doses of most of the ingredients, however, a 2 scoop serving is required, doubling the cost to $2.50.
If you prioritize pump and a high-stimulant energy, the cost may be justified.
