Why Runners Need Protein Powder

Even though most protein powders are marketed to lifters, protein is still a big deal for runners. It helps with muscle recovery, immune health, performance, and lowering your risk of getting hurt.

The founder, Jeff Vierling, dealt with severe stomach issues and the headache of juggling multiple types of fuel (like gels, chews, and electrolyte pills) during long events. That pushed him to create something simple, clean, and effective, a product that could provide the calories, electrolytes, and hydration athletes need without causing stomach upset.

For athletes who want to maximize recovery and convenience, Tailwind Recovery is a tasty, high-quality, and complete option.

I personally tested the strawberry flavor this summer while training for races that involved pushing a 125lb stroller. While I definitely was not training at a high intensity or for ultra-endurance distances, I found Tailwind Recovery to be really refreshing, and it mixed very well. The texture was also very creamy, especially compared to other vegan products I’ve used in the past.

BulkSupplements.com has several protein options, but I’m focusing on the Whey Protein Isolate 90% powder. It has only two ingredients: whey protein isolate and sunflower lecithin (which helps prevent clumps and grittiness in shakes).

Even though it contains dairy, it has 0g of carbs, which makes it lactose-free, so it should digest well for people with lactose sensitivities. It’s also gluten-free, soy-free, and third-party tested for quality and purity.

One important thing to know: BulkSupplements Whey Isolate doesn’t come in flavors, it’s only available unflavored.

That can be a big plus if you hate the taste of protein powders and want something you can hide in smoothies or recipes. On the flip side, it can be a downside because it adds an extra step, you’ll need to flavor it yourself.

(Also, “unflavored” doesn’t mean “tasteless.” Mixed with water on its own, it still has a slight taste that I personally find a little unpleasant.)

Another big advantage is how many size options you can buy. It ranges from a 100g bag (about 3 servings) all the way up to a 20kg bag (about 660 servings).

The cost per serving varies a lot depending on the size you choose, but if we look at popular sizes like 1kg and 5kg, it typically comes out to $1.77 to $1.85 per serving. That makes it the most affordable protein powder on this list, while also having the highest protein percentage.

Most vegan protein powders can feel gritty and chalky, but Transparent Labs Organic Vegan mixes up really creamy and has a super smooth texture. I tested the chocolate flavor, and even though I don’t follow a plant-based diet, I was happy to add this one to my routine.

While Vega Protein + Recovery and Tailwind Recovery Drink include more added ingredients for recovery and performance, Transparent Labs Organic Vegan has one big advantage: it’s the most affordable vegan option on this list. It’s only available in a 30-serving container, and it costs $1.67 per serving, which is an amazing value for such a high-quality product.

Best for Marathon Training: Nutrabio EndurElite Recover Elite

In the same way Tailwind tailors products for endurance athletes, EndurElite (founded in 2017) is a company built around the unique needs of endurance training.

The product we’re looking at here is Recover Elite, which combines carbs, protein, electrolytes, and added amino acids to support performance and recovery.

Recover Elite is unique on this list because it has the lowest protein by far: 12g per 240-calorie serving (which works out to 20% protein per scoop). That’s on purpose. It also includes 48g of carbs per serving, which creates the optimal 4:1 carb-to-protein ratio for recovery.

EndurElite prides itself on using scientifically backed, clinical doses, and you can see that not only in the carb-to-protein ratio, but also in the added electrolytes.

Another unique feature of Recover Elite is the addition of L-Leucine and L-Glutamine, two amino acids that play an important role in muscle recovery and immune function, especially after high-intensity training.

EndurElite also uses three different carbohydrate sources in this blend. This can improve digestion and absorption, and it may reduce GI distress that often comes from taking in very high doses of carbohydrates (>1.2g/kg/h).

Recover Elite comes in two fruity flavors and costs around $2.75 per serving. While that’s in line with (or even less expensive than) some of the other options on this list, it’s worth pointing out that this is technically a list of protein powders, and Recover Elite contains 50–60% less protein than the other brands.

For athletes training at high intensities for marathon or ultramarathon distances, though, this can be the optimal recovery fuel to supplement training.

This product is not dairy-free and does contain lactose. It’s gluten-free, non-GMO, certified kosher, and certified halal.

In the interest of transparency, the one thing I can’t speak to is taste and mixability, since I haven’t personally tried it. I’ve reached out to colleagues who have used it and also looked through online reviews. Both were very positive, but I want to be clear: while I’ve personally tried and tested the other products on this list, I haven’t trained at an intensity that warrants this level of rehydration and recovery for many years, and I didn’t have the option to taste test this one.

Runner-Specific Protein Timing & Usage

Timing

One of the primary uses discussed in this article is having a protein shake post-run. Getting 20-40g of protein within 60 minutes of completing a moderate-to-high intensity run can be crucial for muscle recovery, since this is when the muscles are most receptive to nutrient intake. 

It’s also important to consume protein throughout the day. Recent research indicates that what dictates overall muscle adaptation is getting enough protein over a 24-hour period (1.4-1.8g/kg of bodyweight), versus getting a specific amount specifically after training. 

Quantity and Dosage

An easy recommendation is to consume between 20 and 40g of protein per serving, but this will be dependent on how frequently you eat and your body size. 

If we look at the overall daily recommendation of 1.4-1.8g/kg of bodyweight, and space that out over 4 meals/snacks and 1 post-workout shake, we get 0.28-0.36g/kg of body weight per serving. (I simply divided the overall recommendation by 5. You can amend this if you eat more or less frequently)

For a 150lb individual, that equates to 19-25g of protein per serving. 

For a 190lb individual, it comes out to 24-31g of protein per serving. 

Most protein powders fall within the range of 25-30g per scoop, perfectly hitting our desired range.

The easiest way to take protein powder is simply mixing it with water and drinking it as a shake.
