There is now a range of low sodium pizza and pizza crust products available in stores and, in this article, I’m going to cover the 13 best options for you.

Before I detail these low sodium pizzas and crusts, let’s talk about what ‘low sodium’ actually means and why you should consider buying low sodium products.

Guidelines For Sodium Consumption

Sodium is an essential micronutrient, so it’s important that you do consume some sodium each day in your diet. Experts from the Institute of Medicine recommend that you consume no more than 2.3 g (2,300 mg) of sodium per day. However, consuming more than this may cause adverse effects.

The WHO suggests that we should aim to consume 1.5 g or less (1,500 mg) of sodium a day to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Despite these clear guidelines of eating between 1.5 g and 2.3 g of sodium per day, the average American consumes more than 3.4 g (3,400 mg) of sodium every day.

What Defines A “Low Sodium” Pizza or Pizza Crust?

There is no exact figure for what defines a pizza as low in sodium, but most dietitians, including our very own Registered Dietician, Brenda Peralta, agree that anything below 700 mg per serving is suitable for those who are trying to cut back on their sodium intake.

So, when searching for a healthier pizza or pizza crust, avoid anything with more than 700 mg per serving. Usually, a single serving equates to 1/3 or 1/2 of the whole pizza.

This is not to be confused with ‘reduced sodium’ products, which refers to a product that has 25% less sodium than the standard version. If the standard version of a product contains 2000mg of sodium, 25% less than that is 1500mg, which is still higher than the recommended amount of 700mg per serving.

All of this to say:  Don’t just assume that if you see a “reduced sodium” label on the product packaging that it’s low sodium.

Looking at the nutrition label of the pizza and pizza crust products in your local store will show you how much sodium is in the item. The label will state the sodium content in milligrams per serving.

Why You Should Buy Low Sodium Pizza?

As Lauren Harris-Pincus, RD states, most store-bought pizza products are full of refined carbs, fats, and sodium. Finding healthier alternatives that are much lower in sodium means that you can enjoy your favorite foods without compromising your health.

Pizza is one of the top 10 sources of sodium in the American diet, alongside bread, meats, soups, and savory snacks.

Excessive sodium intake is associated with a range of negative health consequences. Therefore, eating less sodium can reduce your risk of developing various chronic health conditions.

Sodium is an essential mineral in regulating fluid balance. Because of this important role, changes in the levels of sodium in your body can be detrimental to your cells, organs, and blood vessels.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), excess sodium consumption leads to hypertension (chronically high blood pressure). Hypertension can cause damage to your arteries and organs, particularly the heart, kidneys, brain, and eyes.

Chronically high blood pressure caused by consuming too much sodium can, therefore, increase your risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease. In fact, nearly 1 in 10 cardiovascular deaths are attributed to excessive sodium consumption.
