As a Registered Dietitian, I tell my clients that in most cases it’s okay to mix their daily supplements in order to make it easier to take them consistently. But, you might be wondering if this is the case with collagen and Metamucil. 

You can mix collagen powder with Metamucil because they don’t interfere with each other. It is an especially good combination for those trying to lose weight since it increases fullness levels and prevents snacking throughout the day.

Also, it can help improve gut health and fight constipation. 

While you can mix collagen powder with Metamucil, timing your intake and mixing them properly is important so you can maximize the benefits of each supplement.  I’ll explain the how-to below.

Benefits of Mixing Collagen Powder With Metamucil

1. Consistency in Taking Supplements 

One of the greatest advantages of stacking supplements (i.e., combining multiple supplements together) is that it can help you remember to take them, increasing consistency. 

Collagen and Metamucil work when you take them regularly. If you constantly forget to take them, you might not get the desired results. But the more frequently you use them, the more benefits you can obtain. 

In my experience, taking supplements at different times increases the risk of forgetting to take one. But combining them makes it more likely that you will take all of them. 

Hence, it’s better to take them at the same time. It can be at breakfast, lunch, dinner, or with a snack. The time of day doesn’t matter as long as you take them regularly. 

2. Better Bowel Movements

Metamucil can improve gut health – since it’s fiber, it can help regulate your bowel movements and fight constipation. 

Collagen can also have positive effects on gut health. It might help improve the intestinal lining, reducing the risk of a leaky gut (a condition that can make your intestinal wall more permeable, allowing bacteria and toxins to enter the body). 

However, more research still needs to be conducted to determine the exact impact collagen has on gut health. 

3. Reduces Appetite 

Metamucil (fiber) and collagen (protein) are both hard to digest. They remain longer in the stomach, thereby increasing the feeling of fullness. 

For those on a weight loss journey, this is a huge advantage. Feeling fuller for longer makes you less likely to snack throughout the day. Also, you may be able to reduce the portion sizes of your main meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) because you won’t be as hungry. 

All these changes can lead to a caloric deficit (eating fewer calories than you burn every day) and weight loss. 

4. Better Flavor

Finally, collagen isn’t the tastiest supplement. But Metamucil often comes flavored, so combining collagen and Metamucil can make collagen more appealing and easier to take. 

This can lead to being more consistent with taking collagen. 

Drawbacks of Mixing Collagen Powder With Metamucil 

1. If You Aren’t Used To High Fiber, Then It Might Create Stomach Discomfort

The only drawback of mixing collagen powder with Metamucil is that it can create stomach discomfort – but only with individuals who aren’t used to consuming a diet high in fiber. This is mainly due to Metamucil. 

People not used to fiber might get stomach problems like bloating, gas, and stomach cramps. 

To avoid any stomach discomfort, make sure to add Metamucil slowly. Start with half a teaspoon and increase it every few days until you reach the full desired dosage. 

How To Properly Add Collagen Powder To Metamucil

Follow these steps to mix collagen powder with Metamucil for a great-tasting, filling drink. 

Step 1

Grab a glass or a bottle and pour 2-3 oz of the liquid of your choice (water, milk, orange juice, or Gatorade). To make it dissolve better, ensure the liquid is at room temperature or slightly warm. 

If the liquid is cold, it is more likely that the drink will clump. 

Step 2

Add your desired amount of collagen and Metamucil to the liquid. Typically, the serving sizes are 1-2 scoops of collagen, depending on the brand, and 2 teaspoons of Metamucil.

If you use a shaker, blender, or milk frother, add both ingredients at the same time. 

You can use a fork if you don’t have any of the tools mentioned above. However, this can lead to clumping. To prevent this, add either collagen or Metamucil on its own. Mix it thoroughly, then add the other supplement. 

Step 3

Once everything is completely blended, add the remaining liquid. If you want the drink to be colder, now is the time to add ice. 

What Liquid Should You Use To Mix Collagen Powder & Metamucil?

Water or other water-based liquids are the best options for mixing collagen and Metamucil. They can provide a uniform consistency and prevent you from having a clumpy drink. 

Some of the liquids I recommend are:

  • Water
  • Milk
  • Plant-based milk
  • Kombucha
  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • Coconut water
  • Fruit juice (without pulp)

The thicker the liquid, the harder it will be to dissolve, so avoid using options like aloe vera. 

Will the Metamucil Dissolve With Collagen Powder? (And Does It Matter)

Yes, Metamucil will dissolve with collagen powder. However, it also depends on following the steps mentioned above and choosing the right temperature and liquid consistency.

With that said, even if the Metamucil and collagen don’t dissolve, it won’t affect the efficacy. 

Remember that cold liquids are a poor medium to dissolve most supplements. For that reason, make sure to choose room temperature or slightly warm liquids. This will help you have a drink without any clumping. 

However, if it clumps, you can still obtain all the benefits from Metamucil and collagen powder. It just may not be as pleasant to drink.

If the drink doesn’t dissolve and stays at the bottom, mix it before taking a sip. If there is still some left at the bottom once you finish the liquid, add more to ensure you drink all of the supplements. 

How Many Scoops of Collagen Should You Mix With Metamucil?

Studies show that the most effective collagen intake is between 2.5 to 15 g per day. Since each scoop provides 10 to 20 g (depending on the brand), one scoop per day is enough to provide you with the necessary collagen intake.  

How much Metamucil you should take depends on your fiber intake. The recommended total fiber intake for the day is 25 g for women and 38 g for men. 

One teaspoon of Metamucil provides 7 g of fiber. For those with a low fiber intake, you can take two teaspoons daily (14 g fiber).

If you have a higher fiber intake (eating at least 2-3 portions of vegetables and other high-fiber food like oatmeal per day), you can take only one teaspoon of Metamucil. 

Does the Collagen Interfere With Metamucil?

No, there is no evidence to suggest that collagen can interfere with Metamucil or vice versa. In fact, Metamucil has an option that combines fiber and collagen all in the same jar. Therefore, there is no reason for you not to mix these supplements.

When To Consume Collagen Powder With Metamucil

There is no best time, per se, to take collagen and Metamucil together. It all depends on your goals and when you have time to consume it.

That said, timing your intake properly ensures you don’t experience digestive distress at inconvenient times.

Collagen doesn’t have an immediate effect. You might not notice its satiating effect until a couple of hours after you take it.

For some people, Metamucil is the same. However, for others, high-fiber food might have an immediate effect or at least take effect within a couple of hours. 

If this is the case, you should time the supplements appropriately.

For example, if you know you’ll have to go to the bathroom after two hours of taking Metamucil, you might want to avoid taking it when on your way to work or before running errands.

Between Meals as a Snack

If you are constantly snacking in between meals because you are hungry, it can be good to have a snack that includes collagen powder and Metamucil. 

As mentioned before, protein and fiber take longer to digest, which increases fullness levels. So, adding them as a snack is the perfect option to prevent you from getting hungry between meals and make it easier to stay within your meal plan. 

Also, it can prevent you from overeating at the next meal. Instead of feeling like you are starving and serving yourself more than you should (where you end up feeling like you cannot breathe due to overeating), it allows you to eat a reasonably-sized meal.

After Dinner

Many people get nighttime cravings and have snacks such as ice cream, cookies, or pretzels after dinner. 

However, there are better options to add, especially if you are on a weight loss journey. 

Adding a collagen powder and Metamucil shake after dinner can make you feel fuller, preventing you from snacking or consuming excess calories late at night. 

Who Should Mix Collagen Powder With Metamucil

These people might benefit the most from mixing collagen powder with Metamucil. 

Those on a Weight Loss Journey 

Mixing collagen powder and Metamucil is ideal for those on a weight loss journey. As mentioned, protein and fiber take longer to digest, increasing your fullness levels. 

For some people on a weight loss journey, it might be easy to adjust to a lower calorie intake. However, for others, it might be a challenge. 

If you feel very hungry in your caloric deficit, you might benefit from mixing collagen and Metamucil since it can make staying within your daily calorie budget easier. 

Those with Digestive Issues 

People that have constipation problems can benefit from taking Metamucil with collagen. Fiber can add bulk to your stools, making them easier to pass and helping you fight constipation. 

With that said, remember to increase your water intake whenever you increase fiber. Divide your body weight in pounds in half and consume that number of ounces of water daily to ensure you drink enough water.

For example, if you weigh 160 lbs, you should drink at least 80 oz of water per day.

Otherwise, it might cause the opposite effect and make you more constipated. 

Older Individuals

As you age, you can experience a decrease in muscle mass and an increase in digestive problems.

Collagen can help decrease the risk of muscle loss. Additionally, collagen can help reduce joint pain, a common symptom in older adults. 

According to a study, elderly patients who took a collagen supplement had more strength and better muscle mass than those who didn’t. This can prevent complications like injuries or fractures. 

Also, as mentioned before, Metamucil can help improve bowel movements. So, it can be an excellent solution for those who have difficulty going to the bathroom. 

Who Should NOT Mix Collagen Powder With Metamucil

There aren’t a lot of people who should not take collagen powder with Metamucil. However, those who are sensitive to fiber should avoid taking them together. At the very least, they should regulate the amount of Metamucil they use. 

If you get gassy and bloated and have stomach cramps after taking Metamucil and collagen, it is better to stop taking them together.
